Growing Edible Pineberries (Fragaria chiloensis x virginiana)

Add a twist to your strawberry harvest with pineberries. These hybrid everbearing strawberries produce several crops of white fruit with red seeds each season and have the flavor and aroma of pineapple.

These unique berries are hardy in zones 4 to 8 and prefer full sun or partial shade and moist well-draining soils. They are somewhat self-fertile, but you will have a bigger harvest when growing red strawberries nearby.

Plant and care for them as you would other everbearing strawberries. Place the plants in the ground, covering the roots and just the base of the crown. Planting too deep or too shallow can result in death of the plant. Consider using the hill planting system for these and other everbearing strawberries.

The white pineberries soften before ripe and will turn bluish pink in full sun. Harvest your pineberries when the seeds turn from green to red.

A bit more information:  When growing everbearing strawberries remove the runners so more energy is diverted to flower and fruit production. Plants are spaced 12 inches apart in rows that are 12 inches apart. Include pathways between the beds for planting, weeding and harvesting.
