Growing Basil Indoors
Nothing beats the flavor of fresh basil. If growing it indoors is a new endeavor or you tried and failed in the past – it’s time to try again. Creating the proper growing environment will help increase your indoor growing success.
Plant basil in a container with drainage holes and filled with a quality potting mix. Grow it in a sunny window where it will receive at least 6 hours of sunlight or under artificial lights.
Water thoroughly and often enough to keep the soil slightly moist, but not soggy. The plant does not tolerate overly dry or wet soil. Pour off excess water that collects in the saucer or elevate the pot above the water.
Don’t place plants against a cold window or trap them between the window and curtain at night. This can cause the leaves to turn black. Avoid drafts of hot or cold air as well.
A bit more information: Harvest basil as needed. Make cuts above a healthy leaf so the remaining plant looks good and wounds close quickly. Regular harvesting will encourage more growth and that means more basil to enjoy.
