Groundcover Juniper
Cover those hot sunny spots in the landscape with a groundcover juniper. Once established these rugged evergreen plants thrive in hot, dry sunny locations.
Plant junipers in well-drained soil. Clear the weeds prior to planting and mulch to help conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
Regular weeding of new plantings will help reduce the risk of future weed infestations. Water thoroughly as needed the first year to encourage deep drought tolerant roots.
Check out some of the newer varieties like Jazzy Jewel creeping and Burly Blue Rocky Mountain junipers.
Jazzy Jewel has bright green foliage with splashes of gold during the warmer months of the year. It grows 2 feet tall and six feet wide. Combine it with other shrubs and perennials or to cover those hard-to-mow slopes.
Burly Blue maintains its blue-green foliage all year round. Use it to control erosion on hillsides or around taller plants.
A bit more information: Upright and spreading junipers also make great additions to the landscape. Their prickly needles provide shelter and the fleshy berry-like cones, provide food for the birds.
