Take a Hike, Boost Your Mood and Celebrate Our National Parks

Set aside some time to get out and take a hike on a nearby trail to celebrate National Hiking Day.
You’ll elevate your mood, decrease stress, increase focus and boost creativity by spending time in nature.

John Muir brought attention to the need to provide all citizens the opportunity to hike, walk, and meander through natural areas. He petitioned for the creation of the National Park System in 1890.

But before Muir, a small group of people on the east coast had formed the Appalachian Mountain Club. Their goal was to protect and preserve all hiking trails along this historic mountain range and develop new ones.

Many more people from all walks of life and over time have played an important role in preserving these precious portions of land.

So, take a moment to thank them all as you enjoy a hike through your favorite space.

A bit more information: Find out more about our National Parks Systems by watching the PBS six episode series The National Parks: America’s Best Idea. You’ll enjoy images from spectacular locations and learn more about the people who devoted themselves to saving these precious lands for us and future generations to enjoy.
