Protecting Your Landscape from Wildlife Damage

Enlist a combination of tactics when doing battle with wildlife. A four- to five-feet-tall fence around a small garden is the best defense against most critters.  Secure the bottom tight to the ground or bury several inches to prevent rabbits, voles and other small wildlife from crawling underneath. Be sure to secure the gates.

Scare tactics like plastic owls, rubber snakes and clanging pans placed around the garden may help scare away unwanted critters.   Unfortunately, urban animals are used to noise and people.

Homemade and commercial repellents can also be used.  Make sure they are safe to use on the plants you are treating.  Apply the repellents before the animals start feeding.  It’s easier to prevent damage than break their habit of dining in your garden.  Check the label and reapply as needed throughout the year.

Continually monitor for damage and adjust your strategy as needed.

A bit more information:  Many gardeners have success using cayenne pepper to deter wildlife. They sprinkle it on to discourage squirrels, rabbits and deer. Be sure to wear gloves and goggles and wash your hands before touching your eyes. And be sure to monitor your results because I often hear some deer and rabbits prefer the seasoned plants.
