Golden Canker on Pagoda Dogwood

Don’t let hot dry summers damage or even kill your pagoda dogwood.  Proper care and a bit of pruning can keep them healthy.

Pagoda dogwoods suffering from heat and drought stress can often succumb to golden canker disease.  This fungus causes twigs and branches to develop yellow or golden areas.  Once they encircle the branch it will die.

Prune out and destroy the infected portions of the plant as soon as they are found.  Make your cut 6 to 9 inches below the canker (yellow-brown lesions) and disinfect tools between cuts.

Then be sure to water these plants thoroughly whenever the top 4 to 6 inches of soil are crumbly and moist.  Mulching the soil with 2 inches of shredded bark or woodchips will help keep the roots cool and moist, suppress weeds, and improve the soil as they decompose.  Just be sure to keep the mulch away from the trunks of trees and off the crown of shrubs

A bit more information:  Heat and drought can stress all dogwoods.  Mulch the soil around these plants and make sure they receive sufficient water.  Prune out any cankers or dead branches as soon as they are discovered.
