Temporary Storage for Extra Plants
Too many plants and not enough time or space to get them planted? Consider creating a special space to grow and tend them until you can move them to their permanent home in the garden.
If you’re like most gardeners your driveway and patio is filled with bargain plants, divisions from friends and other plants we want to evaluate before adding them to our gardens.
Planting them in a holding bed will reduce the effort needed to keep them healthy until you decide their fate.
Just select an area with easy access for maintenance, but one that will not impact the beauty of your landscape. Place plants directly in quality garden soil or create a raised bed. Use this time to evaluate their beauty and suitability for your landscape. Move those you like into the garden and share the rest with others who have the perfect spot for the plant.
A bit more information: Another option is to heel plants in for the winter. Dig a trench into an annual garden that is vacant for the winter. Set the plants or pots in the ground and cover the roots. This will insulate roots from cold temperatures and dry conditions.
