Planting Tulips, Daffodils and Other Spring Flowering Bulbs

Tulips, daffodils and hyacinths are sure signs of spring.  Start planting spring flowering bulbs once the average nighttime temperatures reach and stay at 40 to 50 degrees.

Plant bulbs 2 to 3 times their vertical height deep.  Try mixing several bulbs together to double your enjoyment or combine early, mid and late spring bloomers for months of color.

Extend your garden’s bloom time and reduce your work load by planting bulbs among your perennials.  As the bulbs fade the emerging perennials help mask the yellowing bulb leaves.

Or plant a few pansies in the garden as you plant your bulbs. Cool wave, Icicle, Second Season and Sub-zero will make it through most cold winters.  You’ll enjoy their colorful blooms now and with flowering bulbs next spring.

Mix a little slow release or bulb booster fertilizer in the soil above the bulbs.  Water and wait for spring.

A bit more information:  Start shopping early for the healthiest and best selection of spring flowering bulbs. Store purchased bulbs in a cool dark location until you are ready to plant.  Wait for the soil to cool before you start planting.  Planting after the average nighttime temperatures reach and stay at 40 to 50 degrees reduces the risk of fall sprouting.
