Lawn Fertilization
Help your lawn recover from summer’s heat with a nutrient boost this fall.
Use a low nitrogen organic fertilizer that encourages slow steady growth. Avoid high nitrogen fast release fertilizers that promote lush succulent growth that demands more water and is more susceptible to insects and diseases.
The warm soil and cooler temperatures of fall encourage root development and nutrient storage with less energy used for above ground growth. Fall fertilization supports this healthy growth.
Those growing cool season grasses like bluegrass, fescue and rye should make one more application in mid to late October and always before the ground freezes.
Those growing warm season grasses like Bermudagrass and St. Augustine grass should make fall applications no later than one month prior to the anticipated first frost.
A bit more information: Gardeners in Florida need to avoid lawn fertilization during the rainy season blackout dates of June 1 to September 30th. Keeping your lawn healthy with proper fertilization and mowing can help reduce weed, disease and insect problems.
