Growing Lipstick Vine (Aeschynanthus) Indoors
Add some tropical beauty to your home with lipstick plant.
The unique tube-like flowers inspired its common name. Grow lipstick plant in medium to bright light or supplement with grow lights for even better flowering. Blooms typically appear in summer but some of the varieties will flower year-round when grown in sufficient light.
If your lipstick plant fails to bloom, check out my Lipstick Plant has Never Flowered article.
When not in bloom, the shiny dark green leaves make this an attractive plant worthy of a spot in your home. Grow it in a hanging basket to best display the vines that can grow up to 2 feet long. Start new plants from trimmings that are easy to root.
Grow lipstick plants in warm locations away from cold drafts. Plants like to be somewhat pot bound but should be grown in a loose, airy potting mix. Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil is starting to dry but before the plants begin to wilt. Avoid overwatering that can lead to root rot.
A bit more information: Distorted or speckled leaves may indicate spider mites or aphids. Try dislodging these insects with a strong blast of water. If the problem persists, use an organic lightweight horticulture oil like Summit Year-Round Spray Oil to manage these pests.
