Grow Purple Passion Gynura aurantiaca Houseplant
Velvety purple hairs cover the young green leaves, making purple passion a colorful and pet-safe addition to the indoor garden.
Grow this plant in a location with bright indirect light. Avoid spaces with direct afternoon sunlight for the best foliage color.
Water the soil thoroughly whenever the soil just begins to dry. Allow plants to go a bit drier during the winter. Pour off any excess water that collects in the saucer. This, soggy soil, and wet leaves can lead to rot.
Watch for orange-yellow flowers to appear fall or winter on plants that receive adequate light. They may be pretty to look at, but certainly not nice to smell.
As the plants mature, they begin to cascade, making them suitable for a hanging basket. The purple hairs also become sparse with age, allowing more of the green leaf color to show through.
A bit more information: Purple passion stems can become leggy. Pinch back the stems above a healthy leaf to encourage compact growth. Use these cuttings to start new plants for your indoor garden.
