Recycle Wrapping Paper into Decorative Pots

Don’t throw away that wrapping paper. Give it and other scrap paper a second life in creating decoupage pots for your garden.

This craft involves gluing pieces of decorative paper onto an item, in this case a flowerpot, and coating with a protective finish.  Many people use white glue but commercial decoupage finishes will hold up much better.

Start with a clean terra cotta or plastic container. Or consider dressing up an indoor watering can.

Tear or cut paper into various sizes and shapes, preserving the colors or designs you want to include.

Cover a small portion of the pot with decoupage, place paper pieces in place.  You may want to start at the bottom, working around and up to the top of the container.

Once your design is complete and the pot is covered with paper apply one or two more coats of decoupage and allow it to dry.

A bit more information: Paint goes a long way to adding sparkle to containers. And you don’t need to be an experienced artist.  Interesting patterns and stencils can help you make any paint job look professional.  Click here for some pot painting tips from Fine Gardening magazine.
