Homemade Gifts for Mother’s Day

Looking for a last minute gift for mom?  Don’t worry there is plenty of time to create the perfect gift she will enjoy all season long.

Pack up the family and head to your favorite garden center.  Have each child select a plant or combination of plants for mom.  Check the tags and make sure they will grow in the available sun and shade.

Now select a container with drainage holes and one suited for decorating.  And if money is tight or you want to be a bit more creative use old pots and discarded or recycled items as containers.  A coat of paint or pretty design will make them look new and add a personal touch to any container you select.  Outdoor acrylic paints and permanent markers work great.

Or decorate a watering can.  Select an inexpensive plain plastic watering can.  Have the kids cut out pictures of mom’s favorite flowers, birds and butterflies.  Glue these onto the watering can and apply a layer or two of decoupage to protect their design.  I still have the one my daughter made for me some twenty years ago.

A bit more information:  Include a homemade card to complete the gift.  Pressed flowers and leaves, photos of mom’s garden and favorite plant, or rubbings over flowers, leaves and tree bark can provide a pretty backdrop to a favorite poem, handprint or sincere thanks.
