Total Eclipse Garden Plants

Commemorate the total eclipse with a few plants that bear the name.

Total Eclipse hydrangea is a smooth or Annabelle-type hydrangea. It grows 4 to 6 feet tall and prefers full sun to partial shade. The lacy white flowers are not as big and showy as some of the newer varieties, but its full, tight and upright growth habit makes it an excellent screen. Plus, the dried flowers remain intact throughout the winter.

Full Eclipse iris is a cultivar of the Louisiana iris with velvety dark purple flowers in spring. It grows best in full sun or partial shade and is hardy in zones 6 to 9.

Huecherella ‘Solar Eclipse’ will wow you with its foliage and flowers. The leaves of this zone 4 to 9 perennial, are red-brown and edged in lime green. The white bell-shaped flowers appear in late spring.

A bit more information: You may also enjoy some of the flower folklore associated with the solar eclipse.  In years past, Mediterranean gardeners believed you should plant your flower seeds during the eclipse.  The blossoms would be bigger and brighter than those planted on other days.
