Consider Alternatives to Traditional Lawn Grass
If you’re tired of mowing, looking to increase pollinator appeal, struggling to grow lawn grass, or just want a change, there’s an array of alternatives to a manicured lawn.
Replacing lawn grass with plants suited to the growing conditions, your gardening style and landscape design can reduce time and resources once needed to maintain a lawn. And many alternatives help improve water quality by reducing or eliminating the need for chemicals and helping to manage rainwater.
Start by converting areas where grass is struggling or hard to mow. You’ll spend time and money during the transition period, but the goal is less maintenance, fertilizer and pesticides in the long run.
Once you’ve implemented the smaller changes, you can expand to larger areas as desired. This allows you to properly establish new plantings and make needed adjustments along the way.
A bit more information: Keep any remaining lawn healthy while being kind to the environment with proper lawn care. Mow high and often, leave clippings on the lawn and fertilize at the right time with the right product. Sweep clippings and any chemicals off walks and drives to keep them out of waterways.
