Celebrating Mother’s Day in a Public Garden
Celebrate Mother’s Day and National Public Gardens Day with a visit to your favorite public garden or arboretum.
It’s the perfect gift. No watering, dusting or care needed for this Mother’s Day gift. And a walk through the garden can raise everyone’s spirit, provide a breath of fresh air and create new family memories. Be sure to bring along the camera. Gardens make great backdrops for family photos.
Most gardens have paved or accessible walkways for visitors of all ages and abilities. And many gardens have brunches and family events tied to both holiday celebrations.
Plus, your visit will support America’s public gardens. They have a long history of providing us with research and education on gardening, the environment and conservation.
Public gardens are also great places to gather ideas for your own garden. You’ll get a first hand look at plants that thrive in your local growing conditions. Plus, they are packed with design ideas and plant combinations you can replicate at home.
A bit more information: Don’t make this your last visit to the garden. Plan weekly or monthly visits to see what’s blooming, how the plants are growing and to gather more ideas for your own landscape. Have the whole family get involved picking out their favorite plants to include in the garden. Play I-spy with younger kids to keep them interested on the tour. Or create a contest for locating the tallest flower, plant with the funniest name or other unique feature. Then let the winner ride home in their favorite spot in the car, select the next family activity or pick dessert.
