Berry Plants for Fall and Winter Beauty

Sprinkle color throughout the fall and winter landscape with the help of colorful tree and shrub fruit.

Most of us are familiar with crabapple and hawthorn trees. Some of the newer varieties are more disease resistant, have persistent fruit and all help attract birds to the landscape.

Consider their relative the rose. The fruit, rose hips, are high in vitamin C, great in arrangements and pretty in the landscape.

Expand your garden’s beauty with other fruit laden shrubs.  Michigan holly also known as winterberry is a deciduous holly. It loses its leaves in the fall, revealing bright red fruit.

The purple fruit of beautyberry is sure to steal the show.

Although the blue fruit of junipers look like berries they are actually fleshy cones. The prickly evergreen junipers add color to the landscape and provide food and shelter for the birds.

A bit more information: Chokeberries’ (Aronia) red or black berries persist on the plant well into winter. Even the birds will wait for the fruit to soften and ferment a bit before dining on this astringent fruit.
