Growing Indian Grass (Sorghastrum nutans)

Enhance your landscape’s year round beauty as well as its pollinator and wildlife appeal with our native Indian grass.

Hardy in zones 3 to 9 this warm season prairie grass combines nicely with little bluestem and most prairie flowers.  The attractive blue-green leaves grow in 3 to 5 feet tall clumps and turn an orange yellow in fall. The feathery flowers appear above the leaves in late summer through fall. Flowers darken to bronze then fade to gray. Seed heads persist through winter adding beauty to the winter garden and food for the birds.

Grow Indian grass in full sun and well-drained soil. It tolerates drought once established, rocky soils and black walnuts. It will self-seed and may flop in rich moist soils.

Use multiple plants for texture or individual plants as an accent plant in the garden.

A bit more information: Thin Man Indian grass is more drought tolerant than Indian grasses of the eastern United States. It grows about 72 inches tall and only 24 to 30 inches wide.
