Grow Hardy Lilies for Fragrant Blooms Summer to Fall
Plant a variety of colorful long-lasting lilies to enjoy from early summer into fall in your garden and bouquets.
Start off the summer with Asiatic lilies. These compact plants have upward or outward facing brightly colored blooms.
Next are the trumpet-shaped LA hybrid lilies. They are a cross between fragrant Easter lilies and colorful Asiatics.
The dainty dangling blossoms of turk’s cap lilies bloom about the same time. These beauties are tolerant of some shade.
Trumpet lilies steal the mid-summer show with their fragrant, large and outward-facing blossoms.
Oriental-Trumpet lilies are next with fragrant, upward-facing flowers that can measure 9” across. The lily season ends with a bang, when the Oriental lilies begin to bloom. These big, open-faced flowers have a spicy fragrance that can perfume an entire garden.
A bit more information: Also blooming are the compact Oriental-Asiatic hybrids with large fragrant outward facing flowers. Add a few species lilies, including tiger lilies have downward facing flowers with reflexed petals and extra-long stamens.
