Planting and Using Fall Container Gardens
Add a little extra color and beauty to your autumn landscape with container gardens filled with fall blooming annuals and perennials.
A pot of mums or asters can add color to your front steps. Combine them with other fall plants for added beauty.
Enjoy the color and fragrance of frost tolerant pansies and watch for butterflies that stop by for a sip of nectar. Use ornamental grasses or Swiss chard for vertical interest. Mix in some lamb’s ear, with silvery leaves, or coral bells with colorful foliage for added texture and color.
Ornamental cabbage, kale and mustard provide colorful foliage as well. Sweet alyssum, snapdragons, dianthus, lobelia and stocks are a few annuals that help brighten the fall garden and tolerate frost.
Create an attractive fall display with fall containers, pumpkins, gourds, decorative squash, bales of hay and corn stalks.
A bit more information: Pumpkins and ornamental squash do not need to stay on the front steps with the potted mums. Try moving a few into the garden with ornamental grasses and fall bloomers. Strategically placed, they can brighten a fading garden or fill in voids in planting beds.
