Winter Care of Stonecrop
Can you tell me how to care for my stonecrop flowers during the winter months? Do they require special attention?
Most stonecrop varieties, also known as sedum, are winter hardy to zone 3. Winter protection really starts during the growing season. Grow plants in full sun and well-drained soils. Stressed plants or those in poorly drained soils may struggle or even die over the winter. If problems arise, move the plants to a more suitable growing location. Add organic matter to clay soils to improve drainage and increase winter survival. Perennials like sedum growing in containers will need some special care since the roots are in a small mass of soil and not adequately insulated from the cold winter temperatures. Sink the pots in a protected area of a vacant garden spot for the winter. Apply evergreen boughs or straw once the ground freezes for added insulation.
