Winter Care for Trumpet Vine in Zone 4

Do trumpet vines need any special care to make it through our cold zone 4b winters?

Trumpet vines are hardy in zones 4 to 9 and need no special winter protection in these areas.  Increase winter survival of all plants by keeping them healthy throughout the growing season.  Mulch the soil around the plants with shredded bark, evergreen needles or other organic material to conserve moisture, improve the soil, moderate soil temperature and reduce weeds.  Water the plant thoroughly as needed throughout the season and one last time before the ground freezes.  Trumpet vines can be a little slow to leaf out in the spring so be patient.  Remove dead tips and prune back established plants to control their size.  Spring pruning will not interfere with flowering since these vines bloom on new growth.
