Water Evergreens and All Landscapes Plants Up Until the Ground Freezes

Schedule I have read in your column and other garden books that we should water our evergreens before the ground freezes.  When is the last time I need to water?

Keep watering your evergreens, bulbs and other plants until the soil surface is crusty from frost.  A warm dry fall can be hard on all our new and even established plants.  Give your plants a good soaking whenever the top 4 inches of soil is crumbly but slightly moist.  Water thoroughly as needed.   Watering frequency will vary with the type of soil, range of temperatures, light conditions and mulching. Fall watered plants have a greater chance to survive winter.
