Using Seaweed Products

I keep hearing and reading about the benefits of seaweed products in the garden. I know that these products are based on ocean seaweed, and I'm curious to know if freshwater seaweed would have the same benefits.

I know quite a few gardeners that are using the lake weeds to fertilize and amend their garden soil.  Most allow the weeds to dry to make it easier to handle. They can be chopped or spread over the garden and tilled in. Fall incorporation allows time for the weeds to break down and improve the soil prior to planting.  I would consider composting the weeds whenever possible.  Contact your local Department of Natural Resources (DNR), municipality or any other group that has jurisdiction over this and other waterways.  They can inform you of any regulations on harvesting and using aquatic weeds.   Your local DNR office may also be able to tell you what, if any toxins may be present in the water.  They should have an idea of the levels and any problems they may create when using or composting the lake weeds.
