Undersized Root Crops

We have been trying to grow beets, radishes and carrots for several years. The radish bulb never forms and the carrots and beets are very small.

Well-drained soil, proper spacing and fertilization are all needed to grow full-sized root crops. Improve heavy clay soils by working several inches of organic matter into the top 6 to 12 inches of your garden soil. Thin young plantings. Leave enough room between plants for the roots to grow to full size. If the problem still exists, get your soil tested. A lack of phosphorous can prevent root development. Most garden soils have enough phosphorous, but your soil may be the exception. A soil test will tell you what type and amount of fertilizer you need to add. Following soil test recommendations also prevents over fertilization, which can be harmful to the plants and environment.
