Transplanting Trees and Shrubs

When is the best time to prune and transplant viburnum and a crabapple tree? They are both about six to eight years old.

Increase your success rate by transplanting these in late winter or early spring, when the soil is workable and before growth begins. Dig as large of a rootball as you can manage. I suggest getting a friend or two to help with the lifting and moving. It will reduce the risk of damaging your back and the plants. Do minimal pruning on newly transplanted trees and shrubs. Remove only broken, dead and diseased branches the first few years after transplanting. Late winter or early spring before growth begins is also a good time to prune trees and shrubs. You can remove winter damage, control plant size and shape the plants at one time. Wait to prune forsythia, lilacs, viburnums and other spring flowering shrubs if you want blossoms. Prune your crabapple in late winter to avoid disease problems. Though a spring bloomer your crabapple will still have plenty of flowers for you to enjoy.
