Substitute for Merion Bluegrass in Lawn
Where can I get Merion Bluegrass Seed? I searched the web, but only come up with Kentucky bluegrass. My Merion is over 50 years old. If Merion’s not available what would be a good substitute?
Merion bluegrass lost favor due to its susceptibility to various lawn diseases. Using a mix of various bluegrass varieties will give you a good looking lawn with a lower risk of devastating disease problems. Midnight, Baron, Freedom, Unique and North Star are just a few of the low maintenance bluegrass varieties on the market. America, Chicago, Challenger, Classic, Eclipse and Explorer are also found in grass seed mixes and perform their best when they are watered regularly. Overseed the whole lawn to provide a more consistent look. Over time the grass seed varieties will mingle providing a uniform appearance and greater disease resistance than a single variety lawn.
