STEM-CUTTINGS-KIDS-GARDENING.jpg

Stem Cuttings Project

Start new plants using pieces cut from your favorite plant!

Here's what you'll need:

  • Your favorite plant
  • Potting Mix
  • Rooting compound (*optional - helpful for hard to root plants)
  • Small container
  • Water

Here's how to do it:

  • Fill small container with potting mix
  • Use sharp scissors to cut 4 to 6" pieces of stem - make cut above a healthy leaf
  • Remove the lowest set of leaves from your stem cutting
  • Dip the end of the stem in rooting compound*
  • Tap off extra rooting compound*
  • Stick your finger in the potting mix to make a pocket for your cutting
  • Place cutting in the hole you just made and firm the soil around the stem
  • Water just enough to moisten soil, and again only when the potting mix starts to dry.  (Keep the soil moist, but not wet).
  • Set container in open plastic bag for added humidity
  • Keep in a bright location out of direct sun

Ready to Grow

  • Roots should form in 1 to 2 weeks
  • Move plant to a sunny location and water as needed
