Starting a Lawn in a High Traffic Area
I need to start laying some grass seed in what will be a high traffic area. When should I begin seeding, and what seed do you recommend using and what do you recommend I put down to help the grass grow in this high traffic area?
Success starts with proper soil preparation. Start preparing the soil when it is moist not wet. Grab a handful of soil, gently squeeze and release. Tap the clump with a finger. If it breaks into smaller pieces it is at the right moisture level. Work up the top 4 to 6 inches adding several inches of compost, aged manure or other organic matter. Smooth the surface, sprinkle lightly or allow the soil to settle for several days. Sow the grass seed in early to mid May or late August through mid September for best results. Use a grass seed mix labeled Durable or Play Mix indicating it is designed for high traffic areas. Keep the soil surface moist until grass begins to grow. Cover with mulch to help keep the soil moist and reduce watering frequency. Gradually reduce watering frequency as the grass begins to grow. Once the lawn fills in water thoroughly whenever the top few inches of soil are crumbly and moist. This encourages deep roots and more drought and pest resistant grass.
