Start Lilac from Cuttings

My neighbor has the most beautiful deep purple lilacs I’ve ever seen. Can I take a cutting and root it?

Timing is critical when staring woody plants from cuttings. This is especially true with lilacs. Take 4 to 6 inch cuttings just before the end leaves reach full size. Dip the cut end in a rooting hormone that can be purchased at most garden centers. These products contain hormones that encourage rooting and fungicides that discourage root rot. Stick the cuttings in a container filled with sand or a well-drained potting mix. Mist frequently or loosely cover with plastic. Be patient and don’t be discouraged as lilacs are one of the more difficult shrubs to root. Keep in mind it is illegal to propagate patented plants.
