Shade Tolerant Shrubs
Is there any type of Arborvitae that can be planted in the shade of 30-40 foot tall American Linden trees? I have beautiful Lindens, but they are all trunk. I would like some screening from the neighbor’s yard. Any suggestions of evergreens and/or shrubs that can tolerate shade would be appreciated.
Hemlocks are the most shade tolerant evergreen. They can grow 25 to 50 feet tall in 30 years but you can prune them into a tall hedge. The cultivar Sargentii is a broad spreading hemlock with weeping branches that eventually grows 10 to 15 feet tall and twice as wide.
Arborvitae will tolerate light shade. Techny, Emerald, and Holmstrup are medium sized arborvitae that can be used for screening.
Arrowwood viburnum, Cornelian cherry dogwood, and witchhazel are a few deciduous shrubs that can tolerate shade and provide screening and some seasonal interest.
