Saving Iris Seeds

My flag irises develop seedpods each season. Can I dry these pods and use the seeds to share the beautiful plants with my family and neighbors. 

Sharing seeds is a great way to share your garden with others. Pick the seedpods as soon as the ends start to split. Place the pods in a warm dry location to finish drying. Remove the seeds from the pods and store in a cool location. I like to store my seeds in an opaque plastic container in the refrigerator. I write the plant information right on the container. Or place the dried seeds in an envelope in a sealed jar in the refrigerator. Plant seeds directly outdoors in fall or early spring. It will take several years for the plants to reach maturity and begin to flower.
