Prevent Snow From Crushing Shrubs
How can I prevent the snow from crushing my shrubs?
Most shrubs suited for northern areas are pretty resilient. In fact gardeners often do more damage shaking the snow off the plants rather than letting them fend for themselves. Start in fall to protect upright plants and those subject to snow damage. Use plastic netting or fabric strips to hold or tie the stems together. As the snow falls the tied stems stand together preventing splitting often caused by snow loads. Avoid piling snow on sensitive plants when shoveling or plowing the walks and drive.
