Prevent Cracking Fruit on Peach Tree
I have a peach tree that produced fruit for the first time. Is there anything I can do to prevent the cracking of the peaches that occurred during ripening?
Moisture is usually the cause of fruit cracking. Insufficient or excessive amounts of water during fruit formation and ripening can result in cracked fruit. We can't change the weather but we can provide a little help. Mulch the soil around the base of the tree. A two to three inch layer of woodchips will help keep soil moisture levels more consistent throughout the season. Water trees during excessively dry periods. Water thoroughly and only when the top three to four inches of soil begins to dry. Peaches are hardy in zones 5 through 9 though some zone 4 gardeners have successfully grown Reliance and Redhaven.
