Poor, Sickly Growth of Spirea

The spireas on the west side of our house have always looked good until 2 years ago. Since then the plants are spindly, the leaves are yellowish green and there are no flowers. Can they be saved?

An increase in shade, overwatering, and drought can cause the problem you describe. See if nearby plantings have grown or new buildings have decreased the amount of sun reaching these plants. If you can't increase the sun you may need to move the spireas. If light isn't the limiting factor evaluate watering. Make sure plantings are well watered whenever the top 4 to 6 inches of soil are moist and crumbly. Overwatering can be just as damaging. Adjust watering and see if the plants' health improves.
