Poor Fruiting on Cucumber Plants
Every year my cucumbers bloom, the blossoms drop, and I do not get any fruit.
The first set of flowers on cucumbers and other vine crops are all male. The next set is a mix of male and female flowers. Look for the miniature cucumber at the base of the female flower. Watch for bees to come in and do their magic moving pollen from the male to the female flowers so cucumbers can form. If short on bee activity get out a small cotton swab or paint brush and do the job yourself. Watch for developing fruit. If the fruit begins to form but rots at a small size you may need to do a little more work. Remove the flowers as the fruit forms and the flower wilts to prevent rot. Next season mulch the soil under the vines to reduce fungi from splashing into the flowers causing this rot.
