Planting Lily Seeds
My lilies set seed this year. Can I plant them?
Yes, but you will need to be patient. It takes 4 to 5 years for bulbous plants, including lilies, to grow large enough to flower. Hybrid lilies like other flowers don't usually come true from seed. This means the offspring will look different than the parents. But that can be an exciting surprise. Store seeds in a cool dark location for the winter. Start them indoors in a warm (70 degrees) sterile starter mix. It takes about 3-6 weeks for seeds to sprout. Move the plants outdoors after danger of frost. Or plant the seeds directly outdoors in spring. Remember it takes time for those seeds to sprout. Mark off the area to protect sprouting seeds and seedlings from overzealous weeding.
