Planting Grass After Tree Removal
Two weeks ago we had a pine tree cut down. We are planning on planting grass in this area. A friend said we would have to wait a year before seeding because the ground under the pine is high in acid and grass will not grow.
The stump grindings, not soil acidity, is the problem. The wood chips and debris mixed in the soil can cause nutrient deficiencies for the young grass plants. Consider replacing the top 6 to 12 inches of soil, adding some additional fertilizer (1 cup of a slow release fertilizer for every bushel of stump grindings) or waiting a season or two for the grindings to decompose.
