Perennial Weed Grasses in the Lawn

My lawn has a number of patches of light green and bent-like grass patches that have persisted all season. Last year I treated several spots with weed killer and then reseeded but with poor results. Is this the only method of coping with these spots?

Unfortunately there is no easy solution for perennial weed grasses. Anything that kills them will also kill your desirable grasses. A healthy lawn is your best defense against this or any weed. Keep the grass 2 ½ to 4 inches tall. Leave your grass clippings on the lawn and fertilize at least once in late October. Additional fertilizer applications can be made in late May and early September. Let your lawn’s health and appearance be your guide. Core aerate thatchy lawns or those growing on compacted soils. Continue to remove weed grasses and reseed problem areas. As your lawn’s health and vigor increases it will crowd out or at least slow down the spread of the unwanted grasses.
