Mushrooms in the Lawn

Every year in August and September I find large mushrooms growing in my lawn. How can I stop them from growing?

Mushrooms are the fruiting bodies of fungus that is living in the soil. The fungus is feeding on decaying wood in the soil such as old tree roots, a buried board or similar material. Once the wood has decayed (food source) the fungus will disappear. Rake the sprouting mushrooms to prevent children and pets from eating them.
