Moving Asparagus Fern Outside
I have planted asparagus ferns outdoors. The plants are turning white! What does this mean?
Sounds like sunburn. Plants, just like people need a gradual introduction to the brighter sunlight outdoors. Indoor plants growing in your home or those moved from a greenhouse directly outdoors in the full sun will burn. The sunburned leaves turn white. Harden off plants before moving them to their permanent sunny location outdoors. Place the plants in shade and expose them to only an hour or two of direct sunlight the first day. Increase the amount of sun the plants receive each day. Water as needed, protect plants from cool temperatures at night and do not fertilize until the plants are fully adjusted to their outdoor environment. The new foliage will be fine. Once the plants move back indoors their leaves often yellow and drop. As the plant readjusts to the indoors, the plant will produce new leaves that are better able to capture and use the limited indoor light.
