Meadow Rue

We cut down some pine trees a few years ago and ever since, Meadow Rue has been coming up in the spring.

Meadow Rue is known botanically as Thalictrum aquilifolium. The delicate nature of this shade tolerant plant makes it a nice companion for bolder foliaged plants like hosta and Rodgersia or sun loving purple coneflowers and iris. The meadow rue seed may have been lying dormant in the soil for years until the removal of the evergreen gave it space to grow. The seeds may have been carried into the garden more recently by birds, in compost or with other transplants. You can move the plant in spring if you have other plans for this gardening space.
