Leaving Carrots in the Garden for Winter Storage

Someone told me I could leave my carrots in the garden for the winter. Will this work?

You can leave carrots and other root crops in the garden for winter storage. Mulch these plantings once the ground lightly freezes. This will protect the plants from temperature extremes and make winter harvesting much easier. I often take advantage of a winter thaw and dig my crops at that time.
