Lavender for Zone 5
During a visit to the Sonoma region of Northern California, my wife and I were struck by the beauty and fragrance of the many fields of lavender. Are there varieties that do will in zone 5?
Hardiness and soil drainage are the keys to successfully growing lavender in the north. Use one of the hardier varieties like Munstead and Hidcote for the greatest chance of success. Plant lavender in full sun with well drained soil. A winter mulch of snow or evergreen boughs applied after the ground freezes, will help increase the chance of survival. I have seen these plants survive zone 4 winters with proper drainage and some winter protection. Though it is a bit more work for northern gardeners, the lovely fragrance and color make it worth the effort.
