Late Winter Bulb Planting

I had some bulbs stored in my garage for winter.  I planted them outside during late February.  The soil was not frozen but a little soggy.  What will happen?

If the bulbs were still plump and firm and received at least 12 weeks of cold (33-45 degree) they may flower for you this spring.  A lack of cold will result in bulbs growing leaves but no flowers.  Be patient the flowers will come next year after the winter chill.  If the bulbs fail to sprout, check for signs of bulb rot or animal damage.  Working wet soils can cause compaction and lead to rot.   In the future add organic matter and work soil when it is slightly moist.  This will prevent soil compaction, improve drainage and reduce the risk of bulb rot.
