Late Start to Bulb Planting
I am planting a new garden of 1400 bulbs. With the unseasonable warm weather I delayed planting. It’s now mid November. Have I harmed the bulbs by waiting?
As long as the bulbs are stored in a cool dark place they will be in good shape for planting. Later plantings are less susceptible to early sprouting due to unseasonably warm fall temperatures. If sprouting occurs wait until the ground freezes then cover the planting with evergreen boughs or straw. If the bulbs produce leaves but fail to bloom this spring, don’t despair. The leaves produce energy that will be used by the bulb to produce a colorful flower display next spring.
