Late Planting of Astilbe

Last spring I ordered Astilbes by mail. I planted the bare root plants right away. They showed no signs of life so I called the company. They said they would send new plants. The transplants did not arrive until November 12th. I planted them immediately but am wondering if they will survive. Should I ask for new plants?

Time will tell if the astilbes survive this late planting. These perennials are slow to establish so I recommend northern gardeners try to plant in spring or late summer whenever possible. This gives the plants more time to get established before the heat of summer and cold winter. I would call the company and let them know of the late shipment and your concerns. They may be willing to send new plants in spring or extend your guarantee if the fall planted astilbes do not survive. In the meantime cover the plants with a few evergreen boughs or straw for added insulation.
