Lack of Flowers on Shrubs

We planted a hydrangea in several years ago. For the past two years it has developed buds but only a few ever open. We had a forsythia in the same place that never really flowered well. Should we add something to the soil?

It is not unusual for a new planting to take several years to get established and start producing an abundance of flowers. Make sure the plant receives sufficient water throughout the growing season. Uneven moisture can cause the problem you described. Mulch the soil and water thoroughly enough to moisten the tip 6 to 8 inches. Wait until the top 3 to 4 inches of soil are moist but crumbly before watering again. Avoid excess fertilization during the growing season and especially during bloom time. This can also interfere with flower development.
