Is Mint Growing Under Pine Tree Edible?

Is the mint that grows under my pine tree and also in my flower beds edible?  I've used it as a garnish, and have considered cooking with it, but I wasn't sure if it's safe.  My cats go bonkers when they smell it, so I thought maybe it was catnip or catmint?   I also know it's extremely invasive, so I pull it up as it comes in, but I'd like to pot one and keep it for summer use.

It may be catnip (Nepeta cataria) , catmint (Nepeta x faassenii) or some other fragrant plant.  Be sure to get a proper identification before eating this or any other plant.  Young catnip leaves can be eaten raw, both catnip and catmint have been used as medicinal and edible plants.
