Hot Water Plant

I received a plant from my mother called Hot Water Plant.  If I protect it in winter, it returns in spring bigger than before and then blooms all summer. Can you tell me its real name and a little bit more about it?

This blooming beauty goes by several common names including Cupid's Bower and Hot Water Plant.  Botanically speaking it is known as Achimenes, a native of Mexico and Central America's forests.  Gardeners in regions subject to hard frost should bring this plant indoors for the winter.  Grow it like a houseplant or store the rhizome in a cool dark location.  Once outdoors provide full sun and moist well-drained soils.  Southern gardeners should provide these plants with a little afternoon shade.
